SUMMARY

Some problems of medical geology and community health in Việt Nam

Võ Công Nghiệp, Đỗ Văn Ái

Up to present time, the medical geology as a discipline is not yet in existence in Việt Nam, but in the nineties of the XX century, the geological sector of our country carried out some projects on the effects of environment on human health, among them, some significant ones were the investigation of the current groundwater status in some localities of the Red River and Mekong River deltas and the program on geochemical ecological effects of elements, such as iodine, fluorine, arsenic, etc. in geological bodies on public health. In addition, scientists also paid attention on finding the nutritional elements in geological environment for disease treatment and health enhancement.

The initial results, although limited, have been helping to recognize the great significance of the relation between geology, medicine and human, animals and plants health. The study on medical geology at the first glance should focus on some highlighted toxic elements, the geochemical-geophysical factors causing endemic diseases, the nutritional minerals and geological environment. The results thereof could help health care and protection, disease elimination and reduction, environmental protection and sustainable development.
