Based on the progression and fading phase analysis of the relief, the process of relief burial in the Mekong Basin can be divided into three periods as follow:
- Early Oligocene – Late Eocene period: period of Indochinese peneplane destruction and transformation into differentiated mountainous relief.
- End of Early Oligocene period: the mountainous relief transformed into weakly differentiated alluvial plain consisting of fluvial, lacustrine and lagoonal sediment.
- End of Late Oligocene period: formation of coastal relief with widened basins.
The buried relief was developed inheritantly and played an important role in the discovery of nonstructural oil traps.
