Study on facies-paleogeography for estimating the influence of sea level raise to coastal plains: Results of the study in Hồ Chí Minh City area

Trịnh Nguyên Tính, Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Lan, Vũ Văn Vĩnh

There are several sea level raises in the geological history, especially during Quaternary (Glacial period). The geological science has been indicating the cause of sea level raise at global as well as regional scale, such as: tectonic activities, magnetic reversal, clashes with cosmic bodies, global eustasy, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, etc.. Therefore, the present sea level raise should be examined in both of cause groups: rules of natural geological  development and human activities (excessive discharge of gas causing greenhouse effect). This paper introduces the results of study on facies-paleogeography in the Hồ Chí Minh City area and their use in the determination of areas affected by sea level raise in the XXI Century. Cần Giờ, B́nh Chánh, Districts 4 and 7 and some wetlands situated along the Sài G̣n River  may be affected by salty instrusion and sea transgression.
