SUMMARY

Devonian sediments in the Quảng Ninh Zone

Based on the new materials of lithology, stratigraphy and paleontology, the Devonian sediments in the Quảng Ninh Zone have been divided into following stratigraphic units:

1. Ngọc Vừng Group, composed of the Vạn Cảnh and Dưỡng Động Formations. Its lower boundary is unknown. Upwards, this group unconformably underlies the Đồ Sơn Formation.

1.1. Vạn Cảnh Formation, consisting chiefly of sandstone, siltstone yielding Lochkovian-Pragian fish and Eurypterid remains and the plants Taeniocrada? cf. decheniana, Psilophytites ? sp. It occurs on the Đồ Sơn Peninsula and Vạn Cảnh, Ngọc Vừng, Phượng Hoàng, Cống Đông, Cống Tây, Đống Chén, Trà Bàn Islands in the Bái Tử Long Bay.

1.2. Dưỡng Động Formation, lying conformably upon the Vạn Cảnh one. It is composed chiefly of shale and siltstone yielding brachiopod, coral and crinoid fauna belonging to the Emsian- Efelian Eoschuchertella - Howellella and Desquamatia - Schizophoria Assemblages, It occurs in Kinh Môn, Tràng Kênh, Thuỷ Nguyên areas and on Vạn Cảnh, Ngọc Vừng, Phượng Hoàng, Cống Đông, Cống Tây, Đống Chén, Trà Bàn Islands in Bái Tử Long Bay.

2. Đồ Sơn Formation, lying unconformably upon Dưỡng Động and Vạn Cảnh ones. It is composed of conglomerate, cross-bedded sandstone yielding Givetian fish remains Bothriolepis and plant Lepidodendropsis. It occurs on the Đồ Sơn Peninsula and Quán Lạn, Ngọc Vừng, Phượng Hoàng, Cống Đông, Cống Tây, Đống Chén, Trà Bàn Islands in Bái Tử Long Bay.

3. Tràng Kênh Formation, consisting of limestone yielding Late Givetian - Early Famennian coral, stromatoporoid, conodont assemblages. It occurs in Kinh Môn, Thuỷ Nguyên, Tràng Kênh, Road No. 10 (Kiến An) areas and on some islands in the Bái Tử Long and Hạ Long Bays. It lies conformably upon the Đồ Sơn Formation and unclearly under Uppermost Famennian - Lowermost Carboniferous sediments of the Cát Bà and Phố Hàn Formations. In former works the siliceous beds occurring at Pháp Cổ, Phi Liệt, Đò Đụn Villages were considered as components of the Tràng Kênh Formation, but in this article they are incorporated into the Phố Hàn Formation (D₃-C₁ ph).
