Mineral and geochemical characteristics of  the weathering crust
along  the Hồ Chí Minh Road, section through the Hà Tĩnh Province

Based on the field and experimental data from 21 sites of survey, the paper describes in detail the structural and mineralo-geochemical characteristics of the weathering crust, section of the Hồ Chí Minh Road passing through the Hà Tĩnh Province. The results show that: 1) in this area, the residue ferrosiallite weathering crust was formed mainly on two mother rocks: granite and terrigenous rocks; 2) the typical mineral composition of the weathering crust consists of kaolinite, hyđromica and goethite; 3) the chemical composition of the weathering crust is characterized by high content of SiO₂, Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃ (and K₂O in some samples), while the others are of small amount; 4) the ferralitization process happened incompletely; 5) the weathering crust on granite has clear zoning character while the zoning boundary of the weathering crust on terrigenous rocks display unclearly.
