SUMMARY
Seismic moment of the Điện Biên earthquake M = 5.3
Trần Thị Mỹ Thành
The seismic moment M0 is the quantity characterizing the intensity of earthquake, defined by the multiplication between the area of fault rupture (A) caused by earthquake and the displacement (D) along the rupture surface:
M0 = m D A
where m = 3.1011 dynes/cm2.
When we know the seismic moment, we can determine the magnitude moment Mw. This is an important quantity characterizing the seismic magnitude. However, the determination of Mo by the above formula, in fact, is not easy to realize.
In this article, we introduce the results of the seismic moment calculation of the Điện Biên earthquake M = 5.3 and its aftershooks using the ground motion record according to Andrew D.J. formula.
