“Planning for Integrated Water Resource Management in Việt Nam I”

Contributions for Analytics, Methodology, Technical Facilities and Capacity Building

Recently the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is promoting a series of scientific and engineering-technical projects in order to support development of sustainable concepts concerning Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in different countries. In Việt Nam, there are working now three German institutions in three different regions (University of Bochum in Lâm Đồng Province - a mountain region, University of Bonn in Cần Thơ Province - a part of the Mekong River Delta, University of Greifswald in Nam Định Province - a part of the Red River Delta).

It is our approach to develop and realize pilot facilities, on these facilities experimental studies will be conducted. The considering of balanced material streams (water, nutrients, energy) and development of new products (e.g. by biotechnology in aquaculture, biogas) and re-using of former waste components are basis for a possible refinancement of future IWRM-investments.

This issue of the “Journal of Geology” is only a first view to different activities of German and Vietnamese scientists and authorities to develop step wise technical facilities for future IWRM-activities in Việt Nam. It is demonstrating few aspects of the wide field of subjects, which an IWRM-concept has to consider (here: Engineering Concepts, Planning & Training Tools, Investigations for future IWRM-activities in rural regions with handy craft profiles). In a future issue, we would like to complete the complex list of the different IWRM-targets.
