Geological mapping and mineral survey of the Phố
Lu - Bắc Than Uyên sheets at scale of 1:50.000 was conducted by the
Northern geological mapping Union of Vietnam. The study results indicated the
Thái Niên structure belonging to the Red River structural Zone has prospect of
graphite mineralization. The graphite mainly concentrates within the area of
Ngòi Chi metamorphic rocks. The detailed investigation in geology and minerals
in the Làng Chang location identified some industrial ore bodies of graphite,
which have an average thickness and length of 1.75-4.55 m and 1-8 km,
respectively. The ore bodies develop in the NW-SE direction and their carbon
contents ranging from 10.25 to 19.01%. The main ore-forming minerals are
graphite and scare of hematite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Graphite exsits in
the form of small to medium flakes and regularely oriented disseminated in the
metamorphic rocks. Sometimes it formed small patches or thin bands lying in the
laminated surfaces of the rocks. These are important premises for survey and
assessment of graphite ore in Lào Cai area in particular and in the Red River
structural Zone in general.
